Your service opens doors—from national parks to base facilities. Here's how to secure your VHIC, access MWR recreation, claim your free National Parks pass, and tap into military travel benefits you've earned. This guide covers ID cards, base access policies, and the full slate of travel and leisure perks available in 2026.
The Veteran Health Identification Card (VHIC) is your master key to VA health care, base access, and veteran discounts. It's different from your DD-214—carry this everywhere.
The VHIC is issued through VA health care enrollment. If you're already enrolled, skip to step 3.
Confirm your personal information is up to date at VA.gov under "Manage Benefits."
Go to the VA check-in desk with a valid photo ID. Your VHIC will be printed on the spot.
Note: The VHIC replaced the old "Veterans Identification Card" in 2016. If you have an older card, request an updated VHIC. Processing typically takes 7-10 business days once you visit your VA medical center.
Most states now offer a veteran designation on your state driver's license or ID card. This can serve as proof of veteran status for many retail discounts and local benefits without carrying your DD-214. Visit your state's DMV website and bring your DD-214 or other proof of service. Many states also accept this designation for purposes of the REAL ID Act.
Use it at VA facilities to verify your enrollment and access care
Some bases accept VHIC in place of a military ID for access
Many businesses offer discounts to veterans who show their VHIC
Some pharmacies and facilities offer priority lanes for VHIC holders
